Hours: 32 Hours/Week for 4 days per week. Hours 8:00am-4:30pm

Compensation: $16.28 per hour

Interested in outdoor summer work, forestry, wildlife, native plants and natural resources? Glacier Peak Institute, in cooperation with the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, is hiring a youth crew (ages 15-18) for six weeks in the 2023 summer season to work on forest restoration and trail maintenance.

The enrollees will work mainly with Glacier Peak Institute’s Forestry Institute and be based out of the Darrington Ranger Station. The primary work location will be Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest lands. Forestry Institute work will include pruning trees, seed collecting, planting, transplanting, trail maintenance, fertilizing, weeding, bird box assembly, grounds keeping, brush clearing, mending fences, digging and clearing ditches, installing signs and more. The use of hand tools for digging, cutting, pruning, sweeping, and carpentry will be required. Applicants must be able to periodically camp overnight on National Forest land.

This program is intended for learning and developing skills for natural resource management and the general workforce. Participants will be exposed to physical labor, insects, adverse weather, and outdoor working conditions for up to 8 hours a day.

What you will learn:

● Natural resource and forest management and conservation methods, such as native plant restoration, trail construction/ maintenance, and more

● Communication, time management and work ethic

● Presentation and communication skills

● Additional on the job training for technical and life skills

● How to apply and interview for forestry jobs

Your responsibilities:

● Participate in mandatory training for safety, equipment, tools, etc.

● Wear protective gear, including a face mask or bandana 

● Assist in trail maintenance under supervision and direction of Forest Service trail

construction staff and GPI crew lead.

● Complete required assignments on time (ex: timesheets, project presentations)

● Participate in community events

● Be punctual and at work every day

● Able to follow written and oral instructions

● Able to practice safe working habits

● Able to demonstrate good attendance

● Able to demonstrate aptitude for learning natural resource management concepts and tool maintenance

● Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse personalities

● Commitment to foster strong work and environmental ethics

● Self-motivated, an interest in service/community work and desire to make positive impact

● Able to camp overnight multiple nights at established campgrounds. 

● Be able to lift and carry object up to 50 lbs, such as tools and backpacks while walking on rough terrain

● Ability to stand, walk, and kneel for extended periods of time under a variety of weather conditions while outdoors and perform strenuous physical work

● Must be at least 15 years old
